Fun Writing: Hundreds of People Writing Calligraphy

On the March 25, Feng Chia University (FCU) held the “Fun Writing: Hundreds of People Writing Calligraphy” event in front of the Ren-Yan Building. Not only did Taiwanese students and teachers actively participate, but also many foreign students as well. The Taiwan Education Center (Malaysia) specifically invited fifteen senior high school students who performed well in the last year’s Traditional Chinese Character Calligraphy Contest for National High School Students, an event sponsored by the Malaysia’s FCU Alumni Association.

President Lee Bing-Jean (李秉乾) defined calligraphy as not only a national treasure but also the soul of Chinese culture. The experience of writing Chinese calligraphy at the activity gives students a chance to witness first-hand the heart and soul of Chinese culture, realize the joy of participating in Chinese cultural activities, and also offers the opportunity to engage in calligraphy exchanges with international students. Vice Chairman Kao Cheng-Shu (高承恕) indicated that while each nation has a unique writing method and skill, only Chinese has developed its system of writing to such a sophisticated level. Chinese characters not only have a practical value, but also can be considered a unique art form. Participation by the Malaysian senior high school students added an enriching cultural contribution to the FCU’s calligraphy event.

FCU strives to cultivate students by not only teaching a broad world-view and equipping students with professional knowledge and skills, but also by instilling an appreciation for the arts and humanities. In this way, FCU infuses professional academic standards with the art of calligraphy to make life more interesting. An emphasis on enhancing the quality of our spiritual life through our sense of aesthetic beauty is a basic human quality that modern citizens should strive to achieve. Thus, since 2013, we have organized a series of activities related to the “Aesthetic of Living,” including Brushstrokes of Enlightenment: The Greater China Prominent Scholar Calligraphy Exhibition and the Culture and Humanities Forum. Also, by holding a calligraphy contest for Malaysian high school students, we provide teachers and students with the knowledge that “Quality of Life” is crucial in a modern society.
